Honing vs polishing marble: what’s the difference?

“Honed” and “polished” describe how smooth the surface of the marble has been made. Both are created with the same tools — rotating diamond abrasives — but polishing goes several steps further. The difference changes how your floor looks, how it feels underfoot and how it ages.

What is honed marble?

Honing grinds the stone with progressively finer diamonds and stops before a reflective shine develops. The result is a smooth, matt or soft satin surface. Colours look slightly lighter and veining appears softer.

  • Hides scratches, etching and everyday wear well
  • Generally less slippery when wet
  • Suits kitchens, bathrooms, wet rooms and family homes
  • More absorbent, so a good impregnating sealer is important

What is polished marble?

Polishing continues past honing with very fine diamonds and polishing powders until the surface is so smooth that it reflects light like glass. Colours deepen and veining looks crisp and dramatic.

  • Maximum depth, colour and reflection
  • Less porous than honed marble
  • Shows etching and scratches more clearly
  • Ideal for entrance halls, reception rooms, hotel lobbies and feature walls

Can I change from one to the other?

Yes. A polished floor can be honed back to a satin finish, and a honed floor can be taken up to a full polish. This is a common question — for example, honing a polished kitchen floor that shows every etch mark, or bringing a tired honed hallway up to a gloss.

What about “crystallisation”?

Crystallisation uses chemicals and steel wool to create a quick shine. It can look good initially but alters the surface of the stone, can cause yellowing and patchiness, and often needs to be removed later. We create shine mechanically instead.

Which should you choose?

If you love the look of a mirror shine and the room sees moderate traffic, polished is beautiful. If the floor is in a busy kitchen or a wet area, honed or satin will look better for longer. We are always happy to create a small test area so you can see both before deciding. Learn more about marble restoration.
